Just when you think your cell phone does just about everything… LG announces the LG LP4100 which includes a breathalyzer.

Here’s how it works: Users blow into a small spot on the phone, and if they’ve had too much to drink the phone issues a warning and shows a weaving car hitting traffic cones.

The LP4100 also allows users to set up the phone so on certain nights and after a certain time they do not call certain people in their phone book. Think ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend.

If you have a blood alcohol level over .08, the phone will not let you dial that person. So it not only promotes sobriety, but chastity — and probably your dignity, as well.

Apple Announces iPhone

After years of rumors and speculation Steve Jobs finally announced the iPhone at Macworld on January 9, 2007. The iPhone combines three products, a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communication device with desktop-class email, web browsing, searching and maps — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting users control iPhone with just their fingers.

The iPhone has a scheduled initial release date of June 2007, pending Federal Communications Commission approval, and will be available from both the Apple Store and via Cingular.  The phone will work exclusively on the Cingular network in the US and require purchasers to sign a 2 year contract.  Initially it will be available 2 models, a 4 GB model for $499 and an 8 GB model for $599.

The iPhone include three sensors:

  • A proximity sensor – when the iPhone is brought to one’s ear the touchscreen shuts off. This is to save battery power and to prevent accidental contact with the user’s face and ears from triggering phone features.
  • An ambient light sensor that adjusts screen brightness and saves power.
  • An accelerometer, which senses the orientation of the phone and changes the screen accordingly.
