iPod manufacturer Apple has settled its dispute with IT company Cisco over the iPhone name.
Six weeks ago, Cisco filed a lawsuit against Apple after Apple revealed that it would launch a multimedia device combining a smartphone with an iPod under the iPhone brand. Cisco is currently selling VoIP phones that make free long-distance calls over the internet under the name iPhone. The product was launched last spring.
On Wednesday, the companies released a statement saying that they would cease all legal action against each other and that both companies would continue to use the name. The companies also said that they would work on interoperability between the two devices.
Samsung will soon be releasing the SGH-P310 also being called ‘the card phone II’, the upgrade to the Samsung P300 credit card mobile phone. It looks much more stylish than the original P300, often criticized for looking like a calculator, and has changed the style of the keypad which makes the handset look much more like a mobile phone.
It is almost the same size and weight as the original P300 but boasts a 2 mega pixel camera with flash, micro SD expandable memory, MP3 player, Bluetooth, TV output, and EDGE compatability. For such a small phone it certainly packs in a lot of features!
Apple Inc. has another week to respond to Cisco Systems Inc.’s trademark infringement lawsuit that threatens to keep Apple from using the name “iPhone” on its much-hyped cell phone-music player.
After the companies had previously agreed to extend the deadline until Thursday night, the world’s largest networking equipment maker said Apple now has until Wednesday to respond to the lawsuit filed last month in San Francisco federal court.
Both companies reiterated previous statements that they want to use the extra time to reach a settlement.
Cisco, whose Linksys division began shipping a line of iPhones last spring, has said it would allow Apple to use the trademarked name but wants both companies’ phones to be able to communicate with each other. It has not provided details of such interoperability.
Apple has called the lawsuit “silly” and argued that it’s entitled to use the iPhone name because the phones operate over different networks. Apple’s works using cellular technology, and Cisco’s operates over the Internet using a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

Cisco has owned the trademark since 2000, when it acquired InfoGear Technology Corp., which originally registered the name.
